President Muhammadu Buhari finally spoke to the nation concerning the unrest in the country, which was flamed by the #EndSARS protests. However, he failed to specifically address the Lekki shooting. Time will tell if this was an omission or a deliberate tactic by the presidency.
The call for an end to police brutality has never been this loud. Nigerians and the world heard it clearly. In his speech, the President admitted to this fact.
I screen recorded this from @dj_switchaholic live video on IG… This is really terrible ššš.

Sponsored thugs unleash mayhem
The #EndSARS protest didn’t go without spilling some blood. There were so many disturbing images across social media. There were videos circulating showing government officials allegedly using thugs to cause mayhem at protests grounds in Abuja.

Another disturbing news was the shooting of unarmed men in some parts of Lagos. All this happened in the midst of unchecked looting by thugs. These are expected to be looked into by the commission of inquiries set up by the State Governor.
What has left many disappointed is the indirect link of the military to the Lekki attack. The governor of Lagos state – Babajide Sanwo-Olu – had said in his statement; he did not control the rules of engagement of the army. He refused to name those responsible for such carnage on unarmed protesters.
There were riots across parts of the country as the protests were hijacked by thugs. The genuine protesters never saw it coming. No one did.
The crowd got larger as the days progressed. And if the protests had remained peaceful as witnessed in the first 12 days, perhaps the outcome would have been different.

Who is responsible for the Lekki shooting?
No one so far has claimed responsibility for the Lekki shooting. This is quite surprising in a country like Nigeria, with high military intelligence.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu also assured Lagosians that he was investigating what happened. And on the other hand, the Nigerian military has been seen brandishing wrong signs on articles blaming them for the attack.
So who is to blame for the Lekki tollgate attack? In a democratic country, why would military personnel shoot at unarmed, peaceful protesters holding the Nigerian flag. And singing the national anthem. There is more to this, no doubt.
Looting and jailbreaks mar #EndSARS protest
Due to the failure of a strategic protest, hugs took advantage of the situation. Hoodlums took the opportunity to infiltrate the ranks of protesters in almost every part of the country.
Some disturbing videos show people committing arson, jailbreaks and general unrest in society. As if that was not enough, some business owners are now also counting their losses because their shops were looted.

Hoodlums also attacked the palace of Oba Akiolu in Lagos and stole his staff office. In other locations, they managed to find stored COVID-19 palliatives in warehouses in Lagos and Kwara states.
This has led to many unanswered questions, particularly on why the palliatives were not distributed during the lockdown to serve their purpose.
In a society where many live below $1 per day, some highly placed individuals decided to hide what belongs to society in warehouses. To what end? This is yet another institutional problem that needs to be addressed.
Although it is still too early to know what really happened at Lekki, the world is waiting for Sanwo-Olu to do justice to the CCTV footage analysis report.
Nigerians are hoping and praying that the Presidency will this time around effect the five demands made by the #EndSARS protesters.
This is the beginning of a journey to a better Nigeria that we all crave.
