Democracy is working in Nigeria, Matawalle warns coup mongers

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle has condemned those advocating for the undemocratic change of government, labeling them as agents of darkness.

In a statement released by Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Information, Press, and Public Relations, the minister cautioned coup instigators urging for the unconstitutional removal of President Bola Tinubu to cease their dishonorable pursuits. He sternly warned that the government would not handle those involved with leniency.

He denounced the notion of a violent government overthrow by the military as absurd, preposterous, and naĆÆve, asserting that the military recognizes the supremacy of democratic governance in Nigeria and remains committed to its constitutional obligation of defending the constitution.

The Minister cautioned against the perilous temptation of coups, stating, “Those advocating for a coup do not have Nigeria’s best interests at heart. There will be no military intervention under the current government.”

He stressed the importance of elected leaders leading while the military fulfills its duty of safeguarding the constitution.ā€

ā€œThe harbingers of this evil thought are agents of distabilization as Nigeria has a democratic Government in place and democracy is in action under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR and the dividends of democracy are being delivered.

ā€œThe administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has provided a level playing ground for people to express themselves which is one of the pillars of democracy and fundamental human rights are being respected.

ā€œIn addition, some mischief makers posted viral videos and inciting statements on the media depicting a false situation and impression and encouraging the Military to truncate the constitution of which they will never do because they have been aligned with democratic culture which makes coup no longer fashionable.

ā€œHowever, consequent to this and other extenuatingĀ  factors, the Ministry of Defence is warning all the propagators calling for truncation of the constitutional Government to desist from it and face the democratic reality on ground as the Minister of State for Defence, MatawalleĀ  has directedĀ  Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) to go after the criminals and enemies of democracy and bring them to justice.ā€

Matawalle stressed that Nigeria is a peaceful country, where citizens engage in enterprise without uprising or mass protests.Ā

He argued that the recent criminal attacks on a warehouse and a haulage vehicle carrying food items should not prompt unpatriotic individuals to call for military intervention, as such actions have no place in modern realities.

“The military maintains a high level of professionalism and fosters good civil-military relationships, prioritizing the defense of our constitution,” Matawalle stated.

“I urge all Nigerians to unite and support the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR in his endeavors to make Nigeria great.ā€

The minister reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to defend the constitution and uphold democracy. He reassured the public of the military’s readiness to ensure the safety and security of the nation.
