As we await the resumption of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) scheduled for next month, the focus remains on players in leagues around the world. Oladipupo Mojeed brings us another edition on the performance of Nigerian players abroad within the past week.

Let’s take a look at how they performed within the past week.

Spain

Samuel Chukwueze

The Nigerian winger missed out on the starting line-up for the Yellow Submarines in their outing against Cadiz on Sunday.

However, he made a substitute appearance coming on for Takefusa Kubo in the 62nd minute. He didn’t have much impact on the game but helped Villareal to extend their unbeaten run in the goalless draw at Estadio Ramon de Carranza.

Germany

Kevin Akpoguma

Kevin Akpoguma was in action again in Hoffenheim’s 1-1 draw against Werder Bremen on Sunday. This was the centre back’s fifth start of the season.

Akpoguma paired with Kevin Vogt and Stefan Posch at the back, as they set up in a 3-4-3 system. This seems to be Sebastian Hoeneb’s preferred formation.

Despite conceding an early goal, Kevin with the rest of the defenders performed really well. As they looked for the winner later on, they remained very fluid when Hoffenheim switched to a back 4 formation.

Although they seemed more in control of the game than their opponents, they couldn’t find the back of the net.

Players in Belgium

Paul Onuachu

Paul Onuachu was unable to add to his goal tally when his team met with Gent on Monday. The Super Eagles forward was kept pretty quiet and had no goal contribution during his time on the pitch.

He however paved the way for Cyriel Dessers in the 76th minute. The sub then registered an assist, setting up Patrik Hrosovsky for the Genk’s winner in the 82nd minute.

Portugal

Zaidu Sanusi

It was an encounter to forget for the Nigerian left-back. Sanusi received a second yellow card in the 74th and was sent off.

The 22-year-old also sustained a thigh injury. But he recovered in time for Tuesday’s Champions League outing against Olympiacos, in which Porto won 2-0.

Players in England

William Troost-Ekong

The Nigerian centre back featured again for his new club Watford, after making his debut for the Championship side last week.

William played the entire duration of the game which the Hornets drew 1-1 against Wycombe. They conceded a late goal by Chris Mepham.

After the game, William voiced his frustration over the result as he felt that conceding a goal so late in the game felt like a loss.

Semi Ajayi

Ajayi came back into the starting line up for West Bromwich in their outing against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday. He played his natural position in a centre back pairing with Branislav Ivanovic.

The defender gave an average performance as they drew 1-1 with Graham Potter’s men.

West Bromwich are yet to win in the Premier League this season and they sit 17th on the league standings, having only earned just 3 points in 6 outings.
