NSA confirms Binance executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, escapes from lawful custody

The Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) confirmed on Monday that Nadeem Anjarwalla, a suspect in the ongoing criminal probe into Binance’s activities in Nigeria, escaped from lawful custody on Friday, March 22, 2024. 

Zakari Mijinyawa, Head of Strategic Communication at the Office of the National Security Adviser, stated that upon receiving this report, immediate steps were taken in conjunction with relevant security agencies, MDAs, and the international community to apprehend the suspect.

According to the statement, security agencies are collaborating with Interpol to obtain an international arrest warrant for the suspect. Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Anjarwalla fled Nigeria using a smuggled passport. 

The personnel responsible for the suspect’s custody have been arrested, and a thorough investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding his escape from lawful detention.

It’s worth recalling that the Federal Government of Nigeria, like other governments worldwide, has been investigating money laundering and terrorism financing transactions on the Binance currency exchange platform. 

“Until his escape, Nadeem Anjarwalla, who holds British and Kenyan nationalities and served as Binance’s Africa regional manager, was undergoing trial in Nigerian courts.

“The  suspect fled while under a 14-day remand order by a Nigerian court and was scheduled to appear before the court again on April 4, 2024. 

“We urge the Nigerian public and the international community to provide any information they have that can assist law enforcement agencies in apprehending the suspect.”
