Regardless of results on the football field of play ending as intended or otherwise, the plaudits or criticism on most occasions fall to the men in the dugout.
With many teams boasting commanding performances this season and others not so so, a lot of football managers have shown the exit door while another contingent will expectedly depart their jobs come the summer. This article takes a delve into this set.
The Serie A spree
Jose Mourinho lost the AS Roma job back in January just days after communicating his love for the club and a desire to continue at the helm. A series of disappointing results across domestic and continental campaigns saw the Portuguese gaffer lose his job.
Club legend Daniele De Rossi came over on an interim basis to the steady the ship and has infact done just that. The Rome based outfit has seen an upturn in form in the league and has navigated tough continental clashes to get them past Feyenoord Rotterdam, Brighton and Hove Albion and now a tie with local rivals AC Milan.
Napoli brought in Rudi Garcia to take over in Naples with title winning manager Luciano Spalletti departing for the Italian national team. Garcia’s time at the club was a complete shadow of their previous campaign with horrendous showings seeing the club fall down the log. A squabble with star forward Victor Osimhen also happening along the way.
His sack paved way for Walter Mazzari to continue in his stead. Different football coaches, same luck was however the fate of the club. Mazzari was also shown the exit door in similar fashion over the turn of the year.
So far, twelve managers have lost their jobs this season in the league including the likes of Maurizio Sarri, Alessio Dionisi, Pippo Inzaghi etc.
Calmer English Premier League
As compared to previous years, fewer managers have been dismissed so far this term (4).
Spanish manager Julen Lopetegui was first of the bunch. The former Real Madrid and Sevilla gaffer left the club side in early August and was replaced by Gary O’Neil that surprisingly didn’t retain the AFC Bournemouth job.
Sheffield United wallowing in relegation battles also terminated the age-old relationship with Paul Heckingbottom.
Former Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Nuno Espirito Santo is now in charge at Forest road following Steve Cooper’s exit in mid-december.
Most recently, the veteran Roy Hodgson was replaced at Crystal Palace by ex-Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner with growing health concerns.
The Special ones
Longest serving premier league manager Jurgen Klopp announced he’ll depart the club side come the summer having spent almost a decade at the club as he was running out of energy.
Still recovering from the shock, Barcelona legend and incumbent manager Xavi Hernandez also admitted he’ll cede his job come the end of this campaign and has reiterated on multiple occasions that he’ll not reconsider that opinion.
German gaffer Thomas Tuchel will lose his job at the end of the season with arguably one of the worst seasons for Bayern Munich FC. The club’s abysmal campaign has seen Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen nick the Bundesliga the title off them in rather unique fashion.
