‘’If you think education is costly, try ignorance.’’ This statement is widely embraced in defense of the importance of education. Many aspire to get into University or other tertiary institution to further their knowledge base and become professionals in their chosen field.

And also because they believe it will position them for better job opportunities and propel them into a world otherwise out of reach.

In this article, Blessing Enenaite outlines five kinds of students that one is likely to find at University.

1. The bookworm

Unarguably, every university has this group. Those in this group are first to get to class. After lectures, you will find them discussing what they have just learnt.

Away from the lecture hall, you will find them at the library in their quest for even more knowledge.

They are majorly interested in graduating with nothing short of a first class degree. Hence, they put in the extra effort required to ensure that they excel.

2. The fashionista

Dressing flamboyantly is the trademark for this group of students. They are keen on dressing to kill and keep abreast of the latest fashion trends.

Should financing their lifestyle become a problem, they are happy to borrow clothes and accessories. Their main priority is to be seen ‘looking the part’.

3. The spiritual

Nigerian universities are dotted with various fellowships. Usually, the beginning of a session is a time when fellowships try to get new students to become members.

They assist the ‘freshers’ with whatever challenge they may be having. They call it ‘catching them young’.

These fellowships stand like family for their students members. However, students in this group often place struggle to find the balance between their spiritual life and academics.

4. I-must-go-to-the-university crew:

According to this group, being at university attracts respect. They are not too bright academically and would probably do better by acquiring vocational kills. However they would rather be a part of the university vibe.

Those in this group may struggle to get good grades but they care less. When they finally leave university, they may pursue other options which do not require submitting their certificates.

However, they will flaunt their certificates whenever it suits so that people don’t look down at them.

5. University couples:

This group is very rampant in almost every Nigerian university. They always do things together; from attending lectures to attending school events.

They are always eager to make a statement about their relationship and may even go to the extent of wearing matching outfits when going out.

Some continue their relationship even after graduation and may even get married. However many of these relationships end up crashing even before the couples get their university degree.
