Serie A club AC Milan has announced the appointment of Paulo Fonseca as Head Coach of the Men’s First Team.
In a statement confirmed by Milan on Thursday, Fonseca will now replace Italian manager Stefano Pioli.
Fonseca started his coaching career with Estrela da Amadora’s youth system in 2005. He later occupied coaching positions in the lower leagues in his native Portugal.

His maiden top-flight appearance as manager was with PaƧos de Ferreira. He also qualified the team for the Uefa Champions League play-off round. He then joined FC Porto in 2013, winning his first piece of silverware as a manager – the SupertaƧa.
Fonseca had a spell at Braga, a team he led to the TaƧa de Portugal title before teaming up with Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk.
While at Shakhtar, he won seven trophies and finished with a record 103 wins in 139 games. In 2019, Fonseca had his first taste of Italian football management when he was signed by AS Roma.
After two years, he led them to the Europa League semi-final. He became coach of French Ligue 1 club Lille in 2022 and twice helped the club qualify for European competitions.
Milan’s hierarchy have deemed the 51-year-old fit and experienced enough to take charge of managerial affairs at the club. Fonseca joins the seven-time Champions League winners on a three-year deal.
In their history, AC Milan has won 19 league titles, making it the third-most successful Serie A club. Only Juventus and Inter Milan are more successful. Milan has also won 5 Coppa Italia titles as well as 7Ā Supercoppa ItalianaĀ trophies.
