June 17, one time in history was a special day that marked historical events celebrated until this day. June 17 also doubles as birthdays, historical happenings , signing of significant bills into laws. All these happenings, we can not help but reminisce about the cause of it.
Eat Your Veggies Day
Today in the United States is ā Eat your Veggies Dayā. This celebration is a national celebration in the United States but its essence is universal. You don’t have to be a vegetarian to cop the nutrients of vegetables.
You should add a considerable amount of vegetables to your meals everyday. In the USA, it is advisable to eat five portions of vegetables per day. Yes, five portions of 80g each. The importance of vegetables cannot be overemphasized. Vegetables contain an array of vitamins, fibers, proteins and even carbohydrates.All these nutrients help to prevent the risk of heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, bone loss and some cancer.
Vegetables have nutrients for healthy hair and skin. You can be creative with vegetable consumption, your whole meal can be vegetable based or vegetables can serve as your snack.

Juneteenth Day also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day is a federal holiday in the USA . It is celebrated every June 19 to commemorate the freedom of the enslaved African American slaves after the U.S civil War.
The U.S Representatives and Senate in June 2021 passed the National Independence Act but it was signed into law by June 17. The signing of the act was triggered by the unfair killing of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
Iceland celebrates it 80th independence anniversary
The Republic of Iceland celebrates its independence with national pride and honor. The country which gained independence from Denmark in 1944 has been quite progressive in her dealings. The celebration will take place from 10am to 7pm today with parades, dances and street theaters. The town of Reykjavik is great for sight seeing and witnessing the celebrations firsthand.
The Icelanders picked this day to also honor the main hero, JĆ³n SigurĆ°sson of the Icelandic independence movement in the 19th century. This day doubles as his birthday. Iceland is a tourist attraction site because of the unique natural phenomenonone of which is the Northern Lights, the colorful Aurora Borealis shining across the Arctic sky through the year.
Iceland tops the list of global gender parity in the world for 14 consecutive times now. The Icelandic government through various forums have empowered women and supported gender equality.

The disassembled pieces of the Statue of Liberty arrives New York Harbor from France in June 17, 1887
France presented the Statue of Liberty to America as a gift to celebrate the alliance between both countries during the American Revolution. The statue disassembled into 350 pieces, arranged in 214 crates arrived in French Frigate IsĆØre at the New York Harbour. The statue was not reassembled until 1886 in Bedloe’s Island. Though, it was planned for the 100th year American Independence Celebration in 1876 but financial constraints made it impossible. The cost of the Liberty statue was about $250,000 then and this costs about $5 million now.
French sculptor, Federic- Auguste Bartholdi modelled the statue after his own mother but the inspiration of the statue was Libertas,the Roman goddess of freedom.The French people presented this statue to America in recognition of their championship of liberty. The statue is a symbol of freedom also used to celebrate the abolition of slavery.
World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought
Humans cannot survive without water. Water makes up our existence- water makes up 70% of our body. This day is used to sensitize the people about drought and desertification. It is also used to instil responsible consumption of water because there is the presence of drought.
The UN General Assembly in 1994 drafted the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification setting aside today for the commemoration. There are imminent drought challenges, particularly in Africa and the Sahara. We should protect the planet’s land because water plays crucial roles in food consumption and healthy living.
Kendrick Lamar’s birthday is today!
Kendrick Lamar has been quite a unique sensation in the rap industry. The Pulitzer Prize winner was born today in 1987. He wrote it first rap song at the age of 16 and since then he has been making waves in the rap industry. He is a mental advocate who pushes this through his song. Happy Birthday to the rap legend!
