The monochromatic outfit trend in the fashion world these days

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

Gone are the days where you have to think about what two colors to match together to fix an outfit for yourself. If you think blue, go all blue. You can tweak it a bit and mix shades of blue together. But the no stress flag is to go on the same shade of blue.

Unlike popular beliefs that monochrome looks can only be curated from black, white, gray or even cream, other colors can also make up a monochromatic look. One singular thing learnt from monochromatic looks over time is that it spews classiness and elegance on its own .

The fact that you are wearing all one color speaks to the tenacity and efforts you’ve put into curating that look. For a monochromatic look, you don’t have to worry about color contrast, you just have to pick a color that suits your skin tone.

ā€˜A monochrome outfit is a full dress combination (usually including headwear, purse, footwears, and other accessories) that uses only variations of a single color, usually differing only in lightness and darkness.ā€™ – Wikipedia.

History of Monochromatic fashion

Monochromatic fashion has been around since the early 20th century. The color who first made its debut in this fashion look was black. In the old days, people of high status were the ones who wore monochromatic looks to show their social status.

Black looks sophisticated and elegant. Black moved from being a mourning attire to a color used for formal and elegant attire. A black dress never goes wrong on whoever wears it correctly. This fashion trend got fully blown in the 1920s when Coco Chanel was experimenting with black and white designs.

According to fashion reports, their aim was to make clothes look ‘more sophisticated, chic, and modern.ā€™ The trend faded in the next decade but was somehow reintroduced out by Christian Dior in the 1950s.

Monochrome in the fashion world recently

The word monochromatic can be traced down to two Greek words, ā€œmonosā€ and ā€œchromaā€. ā€œMonosā€ means one and ā€œchromaā€ means color. Before this look was tied down to black or white but these days we have expanded the monochrome color spectrum.

Celebrities have included the monochromatic look into their red carpet appearances. Who does not want an outfit that is easy to put together and at the same it is considered stylish?

Backtracking our minds to the launching of Fenty Hair in Los Angeles last week, Rihanna styled a monochromatic look of wine. Everything was to match!

In the ongoing Paris Fashion Week, designers have explored the monochromatic trend. The models did not have to do much in embodying their outfits because monochromatic outfits just sit on them elegantly. Specifically, Pharrell for Louis Vuitton in the Men’s Spring Summer Show debuted some intricate monochromatic looks for men. The designer, Pharell experimented mostly with the black color. When I say the monochromatic look is in a class of modernity of its own, you have got to believe me.

Why you should opt for monochromatic looks?

Fashion experts have found out that monochromatic outfits make you appear taller and slimmer- it somewhat creates the illusion of length. If you have been wanting to appear taller or slimmer, then this is your cue.

Monochromatic looks create this sense of elegance and sophistication. The fact you are being intentional about not mixing different colors dictates class. Your outfit immediately stands out when you walk into the room.

Styling monochromatic looks enhances your sense of colours that suit you. Apart from black and white that suits almost everyone well, other colours might be selective for your skin tone. Experimenting with colours gives you another perspective to what colours suit you, that is, which one elevates your look or speaks to your aura. And also, what shade of a colour suits you.

You would never encounter a colour riot or chaos when you style a monochromatic outfit. If you are having problems mixing colours for a look, just base your look on one colour only.

Nigerians are even incorporating the monochrome trend into their Aso ebi look more often than before. They choose a colour code that is one colour or a colour with its tinted shade. The aftermath is never far from classy.
