Nigeria’s Flamingos have been drawn alongside hosts Dominican Republic in Group A of the 2024 U17 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Saturday’s draw in the host nation’s capital Santo Domingo sets the stage for an exciting competition among 16 teams vying for the championship.
The Flamingos, led by Bankole Olowookere, are also paired with Ecuador and New Zealand.

Nigeria showcased her dominance during the qualifying campaign, overpowering the Central African Republic with a 12-0 aggregate victory.
The West Africans also destroyed Burkina Faso 7-1 over two legs before thrashing Liberia 6-1 on aggregate in the final qualifying round, thereby securing a spot in their seventh World Cup.
With a strong history, including a third-place finish in the 2022 tournament, the Flamingos are determined to make history. They will be aiming to become Africa’s first world champion at this level.
Nigeria, favorites to advance from their group, have consistently performed well, reaching the knockout stage in four of their six previous participations in the U-17 Women’s World Cup. Their status as the most successful African team at this level bolsters their confidence heading into the tournament.
Zambia and Kenya are Africa’s other representatives
Kenya and Zambia will join Nigeria as Africa’s representatives. Kenya’s Junior Starlets, who are making their World Cup debut, face a stern challenge in Group C.
The East Africans battle England, Mexico, and two-time world champions Korea DPR for a place in the knockout round.
Zambia, pitched in Group D, will have to navigate their way past strong opponents Brazil, Poland, and Japan.
Defending champions Spain are in Group B alongside the USA, Korea Republic, and Colombia. The Spaniards are seeking a historic three-peat after claiming the last two editions of the World Cup.
The 2024 U17 Women’s World Cup, scheduled from October 16 to November 3 in the Dominican Republic, promises thrilling encounters and the emergence of future stars in women’s football.
