Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham delivered a moment of brilliance to keep England‘s Euro 2024 hopes alive, securing a dramatic victory over Slovakia and propelling the team into the quarter-finals.

England faced a near-exit as Slovakia maintained a lead from the 25th minute when Ivan Schranz scored past Jordan Pickford. As the game neared its end, Bellingham, celebrating his 21st birthday, executed a stunning overhead kick in the penalty area, converting Marc Guehi’s headed flick to equalise.

The performance leading up to Bellingham’s goal was lacklustre, characterised by missed opportunities from Kane and Declan Rice hitting the post, contributing to Englandā€™s overall underwhelming display.

Before Bellingham’s intervention, England’s efforts under Gareth Southgate had been uninspiring, causing frustration among fans.

England still struggling

This win, while celebrated, highlighted England’s struggles throughout the tournament. Gareth Southgate and his team must reflect on their performance. Their outing was plagued by vulnerability, disorganisation, and a lack of offensive threat, especially during the first half.

The introduction of Chelseaā€™s Cole Palmer brought much-needed energy, raising questions about Southgate’s initial team selection and tactical decisions. Another substitute Eberechi Eze also shone and had to adapt to playing at the left-back position for a few minutes.

Despite the dramatic victory, England’s Euro 2024 campaign remains fraught with challenges. The match against Slovakia underscored their ongoing issues.

The Three Lions‘ quarter-final opponents, Switzerland, will not be easily intimidated. England’s lacklustre first-half performance was particularly concerning, revealing defensive weaknesses and overall chaos on the pitch.

Southgate’s decision to introduce only one change by replacing Conor Gallagher with Kobbie Mainoo was also brought into question.

Overall, the team’s narrow escape from defeat will necessitate significant introspection and strategic adjustments if they hope to advance further. As celebrations subside, England must address their shortcomings to continue their Euro 2024 journey successfully.
