Tinubu re-elected as ECOWAS Chairman, promises to consolidate democratic values

On Sunday, President Bola Tinubu was re-elected as Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government during the 65th Ordinary Session held in Abuja.

President Tinubu was initially elected to this position in Guinea-Bissau on July 9, 2023.

Tinubu’s spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, stated that the re-election followed the leaders’ decision to ensure continuity and consistency in achieving targets related to security, reconciliation, and development.

After his re-election, President Tinubu promised to focus on consolidating democratic values and upholding the interests of ECOWAS, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025.

As part of his responsibilities, Tinubu appointed Senegal President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Togo President Faure Essozimna GnassingbƩ as Special Envoys to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic.

ā€œI have appointed the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and the President of Togo, Faure GnassingbĆ©, as our Special Envoys to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic. They will work around the clock with our brothers in these countries, coordinating with me and the ECOWAS Commission as necessary.

ā€œI have accepted to continue serving the great members and minds committed to democratic values in our region. I will continue to serve our interests and build on the democratic values and structures we have inherited. Thank you very much,ā€ Tinubu said.

President Tinubu urged the Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS to work towards establishing and maintaining a regional standby force to enhance the security and economic progress of the community. He emphasized the necessity of such a force in light of increasing security threats in the region.
