Here is everything and more you can do on Spotify’s “Jam”

Do you know about Spotify's "Jam" feature?

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

Key takeaways

  • Spotify Jam allows real-time listening sessions with shared queues hosted by Premium subscribers.
  • Starting a Jam is accessible on mobile and desktop; you can invite friends with a simple link or QR code.
  • The Jam feature is worth using for creating playlists with friends, sharing music during in-person hangouts, and syncing audio during remote calls.

What is a Spotify Jam?

Songs are global, but jams are live listening parties that several users can attend from their profiles. When jamming, the MacBook and the Windows PC will play songs from a standard playlist. During the jam, anybody can add songs stored in the queue. The host can then either allow others to change the music currently playing or not.

Nevertheless, you can also use the Jam feature with friends offline or online, listening to a track together. If you are having an actual invite-only party, say a birthday or anniversary, then starting a Jam can be an excellent approach to making everyone get a taste in terms of putting songs on the playlist from their phones. Such is the case when every member of a group of friends wishes to sync what he/she is playing so that everyone can jump in, and hence, a virtual Jam comes in handy.

Jam is the updated version of Group Sessions. It works simultaneously like Group Sessions and Remote Group Sessions, but jams also have new features, such as adding recommended tracks to the queue.

How Do You Start a Jam on Spotify?

However, it is essential to note that only Premium members can initiate a Jam on Spotify. Free users can join an in-person Jam and choose which songs to play next. However, you must be a premium member of Spotify to participate in a remote Jam.

If you are on your mobile device using the Spotify app, perhaps you are listening to a song or a playlist. You can right-click on the music or playlist or tap on three dots. This will display a list of options, and among them is ā€˜Start a Jamā€™. To start a jam, you will be provided with a link and a QR code that they will share with your friends so they can join the session. You can also invite friends by switching Bluetooth and bumping the two phones.

Starting a jam is also possible with the regular Spotify application on the desktop. While listening to a song or playlist, you can either:

  • Select the song or playlist you want, then right-click and choose Start a Jam.
  • Navigate the three-horizontal-dot and click on ā€œStart a Jamā€.
  • The Queue tab is located on the right side of the screen; click the link called ā€œStart a Jamā€.

If you joined a particular Jam using your telephone, it may be time to switch and listen from your laptop or any other device. You can do this by clicking on the ā€˜Connect to a deviceā€™ icon while playing a song or a playlist. This will pull up a list of devices linked to your Spotify account. You can select which device you want to listen to, even in a jam.

Jams can be a great way of posting playlists and listening to them with friends, as people get to create them simultaneously. They also give everyone a chance to choose what is to be played during parties, hangouts, long drives, and other occasionsā€”no more ā€˜AUX warsā€™.

Remote Jams are also helpful for keeping up with what people are listening to while on a Discord or Zoom call. You can compose a list of tunes for everyone to listen to while playing a game or use it to play a favourite podcast with friends and debate viewpoints in real-time.

Jams are also quite effective with another entertaining feature of Spotify, Blends. Open the Blend feature to create a fresh playlist based on your friendsā€™ preferences; use the blended playlist to start a Jam and listen to your Blend simultaneously.

Spotify is constantly evolving beyond being just an app you use to listen to music on your ownā€“even adding social media features to its platform. While some of these emerging features might feel like little more than gimmicks that are fun to try once or twice, the Jam feature improves the service.
