England manager Gareth Southgate has stepped down two days after England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Southgate resigns following the Three Lions’ second successive Euros final defeat, following their penalty shootout loss to Italy at Wembley three years prior.
The 53-year-old served as England’s manager for eight years, overseeing 102 games. His contract was due to expire later this year.
Reflecting on his tenure, Southgate stated, “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter.”

Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham announced that the search for Southgate’s successor is underway. He also said the FA “aim to have our new manager confirmed as soon as possible.”
He also mentioned that an interim solution is ready if needed and that no further comments will be made until the new manager is appointed.
England’s next match is a UEFA Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland on 7 September.
BBC sports editor Dan Roan reported that FA sources indicated the selection process would not be limited to English managers. Possible interim candidates include Under-21 boss Lee Carsley.
Among the early favorites for the permanent position are Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, former Brighton and Chelsea manager Graham Potter, and former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.
There is also speculation surrounding former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel, who left Bayern Munich at the end of last season.
