Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu mourn Onyeka Onwenu

President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu have extended their condolences to the family of the late iconic singer Onyeka Onwenu.

Mr Tinubu and Governor Sanwo-Olu revealed this in a statement on Wednesday.

Onyeka Onwenu passed away on Tuesday night at the age of 72 in Lagos State.

The late Onwenu was a celebrated singer, songwriter, actor, journalist, activist, and politician.

President Tinubu mourned Onwenu’s passing, reflecting on her edifying and mellifluous rendition of ‘One Love’ in the 1990s, which evoked a fervor of fellowship and harmony.

He recalled her many artistic contributions to promoting the public good, highlighting her classic collaboration with King Sunny Ade on ‘Wait for Me’, a melodic campaign for family planning in the 1980s.

Mr. Tinubu celebrated the life of this versatile and extremely gifted artist who applied herself to a wide range of artistic endeavors, bringing joy and laughter to many.

He extended his condolences to the entertainment industry, the Imo State Government, and the numerous fans of the departed star over this immeasurable loss.

President Tinubu prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased artist, hoping she finds a place yonder where the music never fades and where there is ‘Dancing in the Sun.’

The President stated that Ms. Onwenu lives on through her immortal masterpieces.

Governor Sanwo-Olu added that her legacy endures through her timeless songs and steadfast spirit.

“With deep sorrow, we mourn the remarkable Onyeka Onwenu, whose life was devoted to her passion for music and advocacy.  Her iconic song “One Love,” with its profound lyrics, will continue to inspire us and serve as a reminder of the unity and love she so fervently promoted. Lagos grieves the loss of a true icon. Rest in peace, Onyeka Onwenu”, the governor said.
