Domestic Violence: Observations And Reasons It Thrives

The constant desire for one human to feel validated by another has led to alarming levels of low self esteem which ultimately leads to domestic violence.

Although we are not oblivious to the constant pressure of society on women to get married, we are not also ignorant of the fact that many women are their own pressure.

Some base their success on the impact of their man, thereby putting undue pressure on themselves with the intention to ‘pepper dem‘ with their marital status.

What are the causes of this menace?

What could be the reason that makes a person stay with their abuser? When a woman remains in a relationship with an abusive wealthy man, many will conclude that she is not seeing beyond his wealth.

Some have even said that “It is better to cry in a Range Rover than to cry in a keke napep“. This singular statement has spurred many women to endure abuse because they lack the guts to leave that life of affluence. Staying in such an unhealthy environment has sent many to their early graves.

How about if the man isn’t rich? What then is the excuse? Perhaps, she is staying because of her children. Some women would say that they do not want their children raised in a broken home. However, that is not an excuse to endure domestic violence. Rather, it is an excuse to remain married.

When a woman wants to leave an abusive relationship, the opinion of others should not count. Life is more important and more valuable than any relationship.

Many people are in relationships characterized by physical and emotional abuse. Nobody can advice a woman who is not ready to leave. Just like the case of the wife of the Channels TV staff, Ifeyinwa Angbo.

Another case of domestic violence

Dr. Ifeyinwa Angbo is a victim of domestic violence who recently went public. She called out her husband on social media for brutalizing her for the six years they have been married, including while pregnant.

He even went as far as to sit on her stomach while she still had wounds from a caesarean operation.

For years, she endured with the hope that her husband would change but he only became worse as the marriage produced four children. His actions are despicable and punishable by law. It is therefore inconceivable that the one on the receiving end of his wrongdoing is the one he chose as his wife.

Governor Ortom and his wife intervene

Governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom and his wife, Eunice, have decided to be the peace makers in this sad situation. Reconciling a battered woman with her abuser without any corrective action is unsustainable.

The wife in question was quick to accept the promise. She appeared before the press and asked for prayers for her family. In order words, the public should forgive her husband and let it go. Just like that.

Domestic violence creates a vicious cycle for which there is no justification. Those who bask in the glory of intimidating and brutalizing another human being are menaces to society. The effects of domestic abuse are enormous and so should be taken seriously and treated as a crime that it is.

Dr. Angbo is one of numerous victims of domestic violence. Sadly, her case will not be the last. Until punishment becomes directly proportional to the crime, domestic violence will remain a trending topic for a long time.
