Birthdays are meant to be fun and memorable, but some Nigerians take certain birthday traditions to the next level of annoyance. You know the drill: you log into social media, and suddenly, it’s as if the entire country is celebrating one person’s birthday. From endless photo requests to dramatic makeup transformations, some birthday antics can leave us scratching our heads. If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of these behaviors, you’ll understand how annoying they are.
Here are five birthday antics that I think everyone like me finds annoying.
1. Picture overload
“Wow, the love is massive!” they exclaim. But letās be real. You sent your pictures to everyone on your contact list, practically begging them to post and tag you. Itās your birthday, not a photo exhibition! Thereās nothing more cringe-worthy than seeing the same set of pictures across everyoneās status updates, knowing it was all orchestrated by the birthday celebrant.
2. Account number broadcasts
Nothing says “subtle” like posting your bank details on social media, expecting your followers to shower you with cash. Itās your special day, sure, but should everyone suddenly forget their responsibilities and send you money? This “birthday billing” tactic is as subtle as a sledgehammer. While itās okay to receive gifts, outrightly demanding money is a bit much.

3. Excessive makeup and photoshoots
Youāre beautiful just the way you are, so why the extra layer of makeup that makes you unrecognizable? The birthday photoshoot is supposed to capture your essence, not create a whole new persona. Itās baffling how some people turn their faces into canvases of experimental art. Chill with the cosmetics, please. We want to celebrate you, not a painted version of you.
4. Partying and drinking to the extreme
Yes, itās your day, but drinking and partying to the point of no return isnāt the best way to celebrate. Remember, your health is important. Enjoy responsibly and maybe donāt spend your entire savings on one night of revelry. Thereās always that one friend who goes overboard, drinking and eating like thereās no tomorrow, only to regret it the next day.
5. Ephemeral resolutions
Birthdays are the new New Year for some Nigerians. They make grand resolutions only to abandon them a few days later. Why not stick to them for once and make some lasting changes? Itās amusing how people proclaim life-changing decisions, only to revert to their old ways before the birthday cake is fully digested.
So, next time you plan your birthday celebration, keep it genuine, keep it fun, and maybe, just maybe, avoid these annoying habits. After all, itās your special day, and it should be about celebrating you in the most authentic way possible.
