NCC denies tariff hike rumours, focuses on tariff simplification

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has vehemently dismissed recent reports suggesting an imminent hike in telecom tariffs. The denial comes amidst widespread public concern over the rising cost of living in the country.

The false narrative gained traction following the release of a document titled ā€œGuidance on the Simplification of Tariffs in the Nigerian Communications Sectorā€. However, the NCC has clarified that the document is aimed at improving transparency and fairness for consumers by reducing the complex array of tariff plans offered by telecom operators.

In a statement, the NCC emphasized that it has neither approved any new tariff plans nor increased existing ones. The commission urged the public to disregard the misinformation and assured consumers of its commitment to protecting their interests.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, described the reports as “fake news” and reiterated the commission’s focus on ensuring that telecom services remain affordable and accessible to Nigerians.

“Like the others, this is fake news! The commission has neither approved any telecom tariff plans nor hiked (them) as this report claims,ā€ he tweeted.

Telco operators have also joined the NCC in dismissing the tariff hike rumours. The Association of Licensed Telecom Operators in Nigeria (ALTON) has confirmed that no approval for a tariff review has been granted.

While the NCCā€™s denial has brought temporary relief to consumers, the issue of telecom tariffs remains a sensitive one. With the rising cost of living and the vital role of telecommunications in modern life, any potential increase in tariffs is likely to be met with strong public resistance.

The NCCā€™s directive to telecom operators to simplify their tariff plans is a step in the right direction. However, the commission must continue to monitor the situation closely and take necessary measures to prevent any undue burden on consumers.
