The recent conclusion of the Paris Olympics 2024 brought Nigeria’s status as Africa’s giant to light. We were particularly proud of the women who represented Nigeria in international sports at the Olympics. Even Nigerians were winning medals on behalf of other nations.
Today, we will examine the women who made us proud to represent Nigeria at the Paris Olympics 2024.
1. Tobi Amusan
Tobi is one of Nigeria’s best track and field athletes, having broken continental and world records. The 27-year-old has been making waves with her sprints since she was a teenager.
She achieved a world record in 2022, which greatly increased her notoriety. With a time of 12.12 seconds, Tobi Amusan won the women’s 100-meter hurdles semi-final in Eugene, Oregon, in 2022. This competition made her the first Nigerian athlete with an amazing meet record to bag this achievement. She is currently the Diamond League champion in the 100-meter hurdles, having won in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Her final time of 12.33 seconds (+1.8 m/s) was her best time.
2. Rena Wakama
In addition to being the head coach of the Nigerian Women’s Senior Basketball team, D’Tigress, Rena is a professional basketball player from Nigeria. She used to be part of the squad and played in the 2015 Women’s Afrobasket competition in Cameroon, where Nigeria placed third.

The 32-year-old coach has served as a coach at Manhattan College, overseeing women’s sports activities. Her career took a different turn in 2023 as it moved closer to her homeland. As the “first Nigerian National Female Basketball Team coach to win the FIBA AfroBasket Women competition since it began in 1966,” she guided the team to victory during her progressive tenure. The D’Tigress, who defeated Canada 79-70 in the basketball tournament, achieved a historic feat by becoming the first African team, male or female, to advance to the quarterfinals.
FIBA named her the best coach of the Olympics for her relentless efforts in leading the Nigerian basketball team to victory.

Nigerians were proud when these two young maidens accomplished a feat on the Olympic stage. They competed in the Women’s Canoe Sprint, and it was evident that they had grit and determination in them. Powei, 22, and Beauty, 26, made history by placing sixth in the competition.

4. Ese Brume
The 28-year-old athlete specializes in the long jump. With a personal best of 7.17 meters, she is the current Commonwealth champion and the three-time African senior long jump champion.

She presently holds the event’s African junior, African, and Commonwealth Games records. She has five African junior titles in the sport, one bronze at the Olympics, and two medals from the World Championship in Athletics. However, in this year’s Olympics, she finished fifth place.
