Liverpool, unbeaten in their first three league games without conceding, were surprisingly outplayed by a well-drilled Nottingham Forest side. The Reds’ fluidity vanished, replaced by a disjointed performance, much to the dismay of the home support.
The visitorsā tireless work rate and smart organisation completely stifled Arne Slot’s side.
Match report
The first half lacked rhythm and intensity, with both teams struggling to break each other down. It wasnāt until the 18th minute when Luis Diaz cut inside and struck the post.
England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold almost opened scoring by attempting to score directly from a corner, but Matz Sels saved it. Sels nearly fumbled a looping header from Luis Diaz into his own net, narrowly avoiding embarrassment.
As the half progressed, Liverpool pushed harder, with Alexis Mac Allisterās header going close. Despite their pressure, Forest deservedly held on to go into halftime level with the hosts.
Forest looked the stronger team in the opening exchanges of the second period, creating the first major opportunity. A fluid move involving four players ended with Elanga blazing a great chance over the bar.
Slot responded by making three substitutions on the hour mark, bringing on Conor Bradley, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo. However, instead of a breakthrough, Forest took advantage of their finest moment to deliver a sucker punch.
Elanga produced a sublime pass that split Liverpool’s center-backs, finding Hudson-Odoi. He cut inside and curled a superb shot past Alisson, in off the post, as Liverpool conceded their first goal of the season.
Despite pushing for an equaliser, Liverpool found themselves restricted by Forestās disciplined defense. A late attempt by Dominik Szoboszlai was blocked, and Virgil van Dijk’s final header landed on the roof of the net.
