Since Federico Chiesa’s summer move to Liverpool, his journey has been riddled with setbacks. He arrived Anfield following a £12 million transfer from Juventus and his move sparked high expectations at the Merseyside club.
The high hopes the fans had is quite justified. Anyone who has followed Chiesa’s career at Fiorentina, Juventus and the Italian national team will understand how fantastic and technically gifted the forward is.
However, the 27-year-old has struggled to make an impact on the pitch. Injury and fitness issues have severely limited his playtime. His present situation has left fans and the club disappointed.

From the onset, Chiesa was envisioned as a key player under Liverpool manager Arne Slot. The coach hoped his flair and versatility would bolster Liverpool’s attacking options but that has not been the case.
Yet, so far, Chiesa has managed just 78 minutes across three appearances, with only one start. His single starting role came in a Carabao Cup match, where Liverpool claimed a 5-1 victory over West Ham United.
Consequently, his lack of involvement has raised significant concerns within Liverpool and beyond. Some wonder if his ongoing fitness issues from Juventus will continue to trouble him at Anfield.
Already, rumours are circulating about Chiesa’s future, despite his short stint in England. AC Milan, interested in a potential swap deal, is reportedly considering bringing him back to Serie A.
In response, Liverpool manager Arne Slot openly addressed his frustration with Chiesa’s struggles. Slot blamed Chiesa’s difficulties on missing a full pre-season, which has affected his adaptation.
“He missed a complete pre-season,” Slot remarked last month. “The Premier League intensity might even be higher than Italy’s.”
Cassano expresses his frustration at Chiesa’s lack of minutes
Meanwhile, Antonio Cassano, former Italy international, expressed his own disappointment over Chiesa’s lack of minutes. Cassano’s concerns go beyond Liverpool; he sees this affecting Italy’s national team.
Speaking with Viva el Futbol, Cassano didn’t hold back his frustration. “You need to tell me what the f**k is happening with Chiesa,” Cassano demanded.
Cassano noted Chiesa’s stellar performance in Italy’s 2021 European Championship win. “He was among the best, along with Donnarumma,” Cassano said, voicing his confusion over Chiesa’s struggles.
Cassano also questioned why Chiesa cannot secure even 10 minutes in a Premier League game. “He’s physically unwell, hasn’t settled in, isn’t up to standard?” Cassano stated.
With 51 international caps and seven goals for Italy, Chiesa’s situation remains a pressing concern. His fitness and future at Liverpool hang in balance as Slot provided the latest update on his injury.
