Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has reiterated his administration’s dedication to advancing sports development, particularly at the grassroots level, to foster talent from an early age.
The governor made this commitment during a ceremony at the Government House in Akure, where he received the Ondo State team, winners of the maiden edition of the Basic Education School Sports (BESS) Competition in Abuja.
The Ondo Team emerged victorious, topping the competition with an impressive 31 medals, including nine gold, 15 silver, and seven bronze, defeating competitors from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Governor Aiyedatiwa congratulated the athletes, referring to them as “Lucky boys and girls” and commended their outstanding performance, which he described as a source of pride for the state.
“Your victory has written your names in gold,” the Governor said, expressing his delight over the team’s success.

He also praised the coaches and management of the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (ODSUBEB) for their dedication and support, particularly under the leadership of Victor Olabimtan.
Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasised the role of sports in child development, urging educators and administrators to give equal importance to physical and cognitive growth.
He assured the team and their coaches that the state government would recognize their achievements and reward their hard work at an appropriate time.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Laolu Akindolire, attributed the team’s success to the conducive environment created by the Ondo State Government.
He highlighted the governor’s passion for education and how it positively impacted the students’ performance.
Olabimtan added that the team had previously excelled at the South-West regional competition, further reinforcing the quality of their achievement.
