Gov Okpebholo reaffirms commitment to independent press

The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has lauded the newly elected leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), celebrating Alhassan Yahya as the Union’s new President and Bimbo Oyetunde as its first female National Deputy President.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo commended Mr Yahya for his ascendancy to the Union’s top role, urging him to uphold the values of a free and responsible press.

“The media remains a vital institution for promoting transparency, accountability, and advocacy for citizens’ rights,” the governor stated, emphasising the essential role of journalism in shaping public discourse.

Oyetunde’s historic election as the first female National Deputy President was also acknowledged as a groundbreaking achievement in Nigerian journalism.

The governor described her rise as a testament to her dedication, professionalism, and commitment to truth and integrity in media practice.

“Her achievement paves the way for greater inclusivity and representation within the sector,” he added.

Governor Okpebholo further called for enhanced collaboration between the Edo State Government and the NUJ to strengthen the capacity of journalists in the state.

“Let us work together to create an environment that supports freedom of expression and the pursuit of truth,” he urged.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and independent press, which he said is critical to sustaining democracy and societal progress.
