Gov Okpebholo lifts suspension on State Security Corps

In a strategic move to enhance the security infrastructure of Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo has lifted the suspension imposed on the State Security Corps in September.

Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, announced the development in a statement, describing it as a pivotal step in bolstering safety across the state.

“This decision signals a renewed commitment to fortifying the state’s security apparatus and ensuring the well-being of all Edo citizens,” Itua noted.

The suspension was implemented at the directive of the Inspector General of Police ahead of the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election.

It adhered to constitutional provisions designating the Nigeria Police Force, alongside other agencies within the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), as the sole authorities responsible for election security.

With the peaceful and successful conclusion of the gubernatorial election, the state government has deemed it necessary to reinstate the Security Corps.

This decision underscores the administration’s determination to maintain law and order while addressing emerging security challenges.

As part of the reinstatement process, all returning officers are directed to report to the office of the State Corps Commander or their respective zonal offices in the North, Central, and South zones.

This measure is designed to facilitate a smooth transition and ensure the Security Corps’ efficient deployment across the state.

The Secretary to the Edo State Government, Umar Musa Ikilor, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

“The reinstatement of the State Security Corps reflects our unwavering dedication to creating a secure environment for all residents of Edo State,” Ikilor stated.
