The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has reappointed Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its Director-General for a second term of four years. Her second tenure is set to commence on September 1, 2025.
Expressing her gratitude, Okonjo-Iweala stated, āI am deeply honoured by the trust and support of the WTO General Council and its 166 Members. It is a privilege to continue serving as Director-General for a second four-year term.ā
She highlighted the organisationās critical role in tackling major global challenges in recent years. Specifically, she noted how the WTO has supported member nations through crises such as the pandemic, geopolitical tensions, and conflicts.

āI commend Members for their hard work and determination in achieving progress despite unprecedented levels of uncertainty and rapid economic shifts,ā she remarked.
Okonjo-Iweala also emphasised her unwavering commitment to using trade as a tool for growth and resilience. Moreover, she promised to strengthen the multilateral trading system while delivering tangible results for member nations.
Okonjo-Iweala “firmly committed to delivering results”
āAs we look ahead, I remain firmly committed to delivering results that matter ā results that ultimately improve the lives of people around the world. By promoting trade as a driver of economic growth and resilience, the WTO will continue to provide a collaborative platform for Members to address shared global challenges,ā she stated.
Speaking further, she pledged to collaborate with the WTO staff to create a more inclusive and equitable system. For her second term, Okonjo-Iweala’s vision remains rooted in building a trading system that benefits all member nations.
āI am deeply committed to working alongside the talented and dedicated staff of the WTO to build a more inclusive, equitable, and rules-based multilateral trading system that benefits all,ā she added.
In 2021, Okonjo-Iweala made history as the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO. Her reappointment solidifies her influence as a global leader determined to champion trade in solving international challenges.
