The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle and President Bola Tinubu’s wife, Oluremi have launched the Elderly Support Scheme under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).
Themed “Total Wellness” the event was held at the Armed Forces Officers’ Mess in Asokoro, Abuja.
The Elderly Support Scheme, a flagship programme under the Renewed Hope Initiative, focuses on improving the welfare of senior citizens, particularly military veterans who have dedicated their lives to the nation’s security.
At the event, 250 veterans received ₦200,000 each in cash, as well as essential food items including bags of rice, packs of noodles, and cooking oil.
Speaking at the event, First Lady Oluremi reaffirmed her commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the elderly and vulnerable groups. She described the scheme as part of her broader vision for a compassionate and inclusive society.
The initiative also includes free medical checkups for beneficiaries, emphasising a holistic approach to their well-being.
Additionally, Matawalle highlighted the importance of recognising the sacrifices of Nigeria’s veterans.

He announced plans to expand the program to include 500 beneficiaries in its next phase, making it an annual tradition.
“Our veterans deserve honour and support for their service to the nation, and this initiative is a step towards ensuring their welfare,” he stated.
The event brought together key stakeholders, including the Chairman of the Military Pension Board, Air Vice Marshal IP Irumheson; a representative of the Chief of Defence Staff; and the National Presidents of DEPOWA, NAOWA, NOWA, NAFOWA, and POWA.
The programme provides immediate relief to veterans and their families while reinforcing the federal government’s dedication to alleviating poverty and fostering economic stability.
