Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The Lagos State Government has called on residents to prioritise good environmental sanitation practices during and after the Yuletide season to ensure a sustainable and healthy environment.

In a statement personally signed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the government stressed the importance of maintaining a clean environment and proper waste disposal during the festive period.

ā€œThe Yuletide season is a time for celebration, but it is also crucial that we prioritize environmental cleanliness. We encourage all residents to dispose of waste properly and avoid littering the streets, walkways, road medians, kerbs, open spaces, drainages, and canals,ā€ the Commissioner said.

Acknowledging the increase in waste typically generated during Christmas and New Year celebrations, Wahab urged residents to properly sort and bag their waste, particularly animal and livestock waste, and place them at designated points for collection by assigned PSP operators.

He assured residents that waste management officials would work throughout the festive period to ensure prompt collection and disposal of waste.

The Commissioner advised Lagosians to cooperate with waste collectors and report any cases of uncollected waste to the appropriate authorities.

ā€œLAWMA (Lagos State Waste Management Authority) is fully equipped to respond promptly to evacuate waste generated during the period. We urge residents to patronize only PSP waste collectors and avoid using cart pushers,ā€ Wahab emphasised.

The Commissioner also reminded residents of the existing law against street trading, including the display and sale of livestock on roads, medians, walkways, lay-bys, gardens, and parks.

He encouraged traders to use approved markets for their activities.

Highlighting Governor Babajide Sanwo-Oluā€™s commitment to a cleaner Lagos, Wahab stated, ā€œBy maintaining a clean environment, we will ensure a healthier and more enjoyable festive season for all. Letā€™s work together to keep Lagos clean.ā€

Residents were also encouraged to report environmental concerns or improper waste disposal to LAWMAā€™s hotline.

The Commissioner extended his best wishes to all Lagosians, urging them to have a blessed and environmentally friendly Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
