Lagos govt establishes special task force on noise pollution

To tackle noise pollution during the Yuletide season and beyond, the Lagos State Government has launched a Special Task Force dedicated to addressing this environmental challenge.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, made the announcement today via a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) page.

He revealed that the task force would operate under the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) in collaboration with the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps (LSNSC) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC).

The Commissioner emphasised the government’s commitment to its zero-tolerance policy on noise pollution, stressing that the initiative aims to ensure a peaceful and serene environment for all residents during the festive period and beyond.

Wahab assured Lagosians that the task force would work proactively to enforce existing noise control regulations, urging the public to cooperate with the government in its efforts to promote environmental sustainability and public health.

“As we celebrate the festive season, it’s important that we prioritize the health and well-being of all Lagosians. While the joy and significance of this season cannot be overstated, the government has a responsibility to ensure that celebrations do not lead to excessive noise pollution, which poses serious health and environmental risks.

“That is why the Lagos State Government has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on noise pollution, both during the Yuletide season and beyond”, Wahab added.

The Commissioner further stressed that the task force will actively monitor, apprehend, and prosecute individuals or organisations that violate noise pollution regulations.

He also announced that establishments, including worship centres, nightclubs, lounges, and bars, are now required to obtain permits for events involving amplified sound.

Such activities he added must be conducted in soundproofed, enclosed spaces to minimize disturbances and safeguard the well-being of neighbouring residents.

He added that a comprehensive public awareness campaign aimed at educating Lagosians on acceptable noise levels and the benefits of maintaining a quieter environment will be launched in January 2025.
