Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, passed away at his Plains, Georgia home on Sunday. His family confirmed he was surrounded by loved ones after spending over a year in hospice care.
Turning 100 on October 1, Carter held the title of the longest-living U.S. president.
In a heartfelt statement, Chip Carter, one of his four children, described his father as a symbol of peace and compassion. He acknowledged Carter’s ability to unite people around shared values of love, human rights, and faith.

Public services honouring Carter are planned in Atlanta and Washington, with a private burial to follow in Plains.
Carterās passing comes just over a year after his wife, Rosalynn Carter, died at 96. Their 77-year marriage showcased their enduring love and partnership throughout his journey from peanut farming to the presidency.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed condolences, emphasising Carterās contributions to the state and nation.

Known for his unwavering humanitarian efforts, Carterās post-presidency work elevated his legacy far beyond his single White House term (1977-1981). After leaving office, he championed global peace, democracy, and development through the Carter Center.
For these efforts, he earned the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for āhis decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.ā
Among his presidential achievements, Carter brokered the Camp David Peace Accords between Israel and Egypt and formalised U.S. diplomatic ties with China. However, he lost re-election in 1980.
After leaving Washington, Carter remained deeply connected to his roots, returning to his modest home in Plains. There, he famously taught Sunday school for decades.
Politicians, including Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock, praised his commitment to marginalised communities and his lifelong pursuit of justice.
Carter also became synonymous with ‘Habitat for Humanity,’ working tirelessly to build homes for those in need. Even after injuries and health setbacks – including overcoming brain cancer in 2015, he continued inspiring millions with his resilience.
Additionally, his prolific writing, which earned him a Pulitzer Prize nomination and multiple Grammys, further strengthened his influence.

His enduring impact extended into politics, where he championed prominent Democrats, including President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Carter’s influence in Georgia helped shape political discourse in the state, reflecting his continued relevance.
Carterās life exemplified dedication to service, family, and faith. His legacy as a diplomat, humanitarian, and advocate for peace will endure globally.
