Instagram launches video editing app similar to CapCut

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Instagram head Adam Mosseri took to Threads on Sunday with yet another announcement this weekend, the timing of which surely had nothing at all to do with TikTok and other ByteDance-owned apps (briefly) going dark: There is talk of an all-new free video-editing application known as Edits soon to be released. Instagramā€™s Edits will address people who trim videos on their phones and provide them with ā€œa comprehensive array of tools.ā€ That will encompass better quality conversion, the ability to share drafts, popular sounds, statistics on your Reels, and an ā€˜ideasā€™ tab in addition to the basic features of editing.

You may also not understand anything if all you know is the version of TikTok, which is CapCut, the video editing app. To all the immediate comparisons, Mosseri said that they designed Edits as ā€œCapCut but for creators rather than the everyday video user.ā€

Unfortunately, Edits isnā€™t out yet, but you can download it here on the App Store If you are an iOS user, there is an Android version on the way as stated by Mosseri. While he said the release is sometime in February, the App Store page points to March 13. Plus, when it does arrive, there sure isnā€™t much in the way of spitting and polishing about doing so. I copied this from the latest update on Instagram because I know the first version is going to be incomplete, so please bear with me, but wow, I canā€™t wait to put this in all your hands.

The announcement came just a day after TikTok stated that its application was back live in the US after it paused for only twelve hours or so. TikTok has not returned yet but the CapCut app which is its video editing tool is similarly expected to follow the same pattern soon. In his social media post, Trump stated that he would sign an executive order after his inauguration that would give ByteDance more time to figure out what to do with TikTok.

Threads users have been demanding Instagram to delay the announcement and Mosseri said that Threads has been in the works for months ā€œAnd I think itā€™ll be pretty different than CapCut.ā€ On that note, he stated, ā€œEdits will have a much broader number of creative options as well as most likely a smaller target demographic. Consider an application for recording all your ideas, not a template. Itā€™s like the AI video editing tools based on per-clip or video pricing strategy. Continue new ideas to the factors why your videos are doing well or poorly.

One way it seems that Edits might have an edge over CapCut, at least, is that the App Store page states when videos are shared, they wonā€™t be watermarked. At the time of export, the free version of CapCut has added the easily removable ending logo to the video as before but has recently added this corner watermark as well.
