Amorim labels Manchester United ‘worst in history’ amid spiraling Premier League crisis

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has openly described his team as “maybe the worst” in the club’s history.

This comment came after United suffered a 3-1 defeat to Brighton, marking their fourth loss in five Premier League games at Old Trafford.

Despite an early equaliser from Bruno Fernandes, United were outclassed by a composed Brighton side, with goals from Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter sealing the visitors’ win. Gambia forward Yankuba Minteh had given the Seagulls a fifth-minute lead.

Currently sitting 13th in the Premier League table, United have amassed only 11 points from Amorim’s 11 matches since replacing Erik ten Hag. This poor run has left the club 10 points above the relegation zone but seven points adrift of the top half.

Amorim admitted, “We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United,” emphasising the challenges he faces in rebuilding the squad.

Defensive frailties and squad overhaul loom large

Defensive errors and inconsistency have plagued United’s performances, with goalkeeper Andre Onana’s mistakes epitomizing the team’s struggles.

Onana, who shone against Southampton in the previous match, gifted Brighton their third goal with a handling error. Amorim acknowledged Onana’s fluctuating form, stating, “Really high ups and really low downs.”

The stats paint a grim picture. United have lost six of their first 12 home league matches this season, the worst record since 1893-94.

Additionally, they have conceded the opening goal in five consecutive home games, matching a troubling record set earlier this season. With 10 defeats in 22 matches, this is United’s worst start to a campaign since 1989-90.

Amorim has expressed his determination to stick with his 3-4-3 formation, despite admitting the players are struggling to adapt. A squad overhaul seems inevitable. Several high-profile players, including Marcus Rashford, Christian Eriksen, and Victor Lindelof, expected to leave.

Meanwhile, the club is in talks to sign 17-year-old Paraguayan defender Diego Leon, signaling a potential shift toward developing younger talents.

A Path to survival?

While Amorim remains hopeful, he understands the pressure is mounting. He revealed a conversation with Sir Alex Ferguson, who advised him to “keep positive.”

However, the fans’ frustration is growing as United struggle to find consistency or cohesion. The recent defeats have raised questions about whether Amorim’s system can succeed in the Premier League.

Manchester United’s woes are compounded by the need for financial restructuring, as the club seeks to offload underperforming players and reinvest in talent that fits Amorim’s vision. Whether this plan succeeds remains to be seen, but for now, the focus is on surviving this turbulent period.
