Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has urged 493 newly recruited police constables from Edo and Delta States to uphold integrity, shun corruption, and prioritize community protection in their service.

The governor gave the charge during the passing-out parade of the 2022 Intake Course 3 of 2024, held at the Police Training School in Ogida, Benin City, on Thursday.

In his address, Governor Okpebholo congratulated the recruits on successfully completing their training and emphasised the importance of their roles in ensuring safety and building trust within their communities.

ā€œToday is a proud day for Edo State as these constables are ready to serve. You know our land, people, and culture; use this knowledge to protect our communities. Be honest, professional, and kind in the discharge of your duties. Say no to corruption, work with communities to prevent crimes, and build trust,ā€ he stated.

The governor assured the recruits of the state government’s support, pledging to provide tools and resources to help them succeed in their new roles.

ā€œYour purpose is to protect lives and properties as Edo State and Nigeria depend on you. Serve with honour and together, we will make our state great,ā€ he added.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, represented by AIG Zone 5, Arungwa Nwazue Udochukwu, highlighted that the passing-out parade is part of a nationwide exercise aimed at addressing manpower deficits in the Nigerian Police.

He noted that 10,000 police constables have graduated across four police colleges and 12 formations nationwide, in line with President Bola Tinubuā€™s directive to recruit 30,000 officers to tackle security challenges.

Commandant of the Police Training School, ACP Aigbe Aghaghowa, revealed that the training program included 493 recruits, comprising 181 females and 312 males. Edo State contributed 228 recruits, while Delta State contributed 265.

The event’s high point was the presentation of awards to outstanding constables for excellence during the training.

Governor Okpebholo presented the overall best recruit award to Imoh Patience Udoka from Igbanke, Edo State.

Additional awards for professional and legal studies were presented to Okechukwu Victoria and Aigbe Amadi Favour, respectively.
