The Super Eagles will open their campaign against the Taifa Stars of Tanzania, a fixture that holds nostalgic value. Nigeria previously faced Tanzania during the opening match of the 1980 AFCON, which Nigeria hosted.
Back then, the West African side triumphed 3-1 and went on to clinch their first continental title. Similarly, in 2000, Nigeria defeated Tunisia 4-2 in their opening match before reaching the final as co-hosts.
However, Tunisia eliminated Nigeria in the Round of 16 at the 2021 AFCON, while Uganda secured a 2-1 victory over the Super Eagles during the 1978 tournament.
Meanwhile, new Super Eagles head coach Éric Sékou Chelle remains optimistic about his team’s chances. “Nigeria has a good crop of players globally, and we believe we are up to the task,” he said.
Former Nigerian international Mutiu Adepoju echoed this confidence, praising the players’ recent performances in Europe and expressing hope for a fourth AFCON title.
Interesting matchups to look forward to
The draw also produced other fascinating groups. Hosts Morocco, the 1976 champions, lead Group A alongside Zambia, Mali, and Comoros. Meanwhile, reigning champions Cote d’Ivoire head Group F, where they will face five-time winners Cameroon, Gabon, and Mozambique.
Elsewhere, Senegal, the 2021 champions, will battle DR Congo, Benin Republic, and Botswana in Group D. Algeria, winners in 1990 and 2019, headline Group E, which includes Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, and Sudan.
With the tournament approaching, teams are gearing up for what promises to be an exciting showdown in Morocco.
