President Bola Tinubu has appointed Abba Abubakar Aliyu as the new Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
Bayo Onanuga, Tinubuās Special Adviser on Information & Strategy in a statement on Friday said the appointment takes effect from January 23, 2025 and is for an initial term of four years.
Aliyu, who has been serving as the acting Managing Director of the agency since March 2024, brings over 20 years of experience in the energy and organizational development sectors, both in the private and public spheres.
Throughout his career, he has held pivotal leadership positions in the on-grid and off-grid power sectors, as well as in Nigeria’s water resources and transportation sectors.

Before his appointment, Aliyu served as the head of the Project Management Unit at the Nigeria Electrification Project and held various leadership roles at Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading PLC (NBET), including General Manager of Corporate Services, Projects, and Research, and Deputy General Manager.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that Aliyu would use his wealth of experience to advance the REA’s goal of providing reliable electricity to rural communities.
This, the President noted, would contribute significantly to the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda for sustainable energy and power development in the country.
