Super Eagles players Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu scored as Southampton finally ended their 13-game winless streak in the Premier League, clinching a crucial 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
Onuachu’s late strike sealed the Saints’ first top-flight away win in 20 matches, providing hope in their fight for survival.
The match, featuring the league’s bottom two sides, was fiercely contested. Southampton struck in the 21st minute when Mateus Fernandes’ deflected cross found Aribo, who volleyed past Kosovan goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.

However, Ipswich responded swiftly, with Liam Delap calmly slotting home in the 31st minute after outpacing Jan Bednarek.
As both teams searched for a breakthrough, Ipswich nearly took the lead before halftime. Nathan Broadhead forced a close-range save from Aaron Ramsdale, while Julio Enciso curled a free-kick narrowly wide. Despite their dominance, the hosts couldn’t capitalise, allowing Southampton to stay in contention.
The second half saw fewer clear chances, though Ramsdale had to deny Delap from a tight angle in the 71st minute. Ipswich looked set to earn a draw, but Southampton had other ideas. In the 87th minute, Muric parried Kamaldeen Sulemana’s shot, and Onuachu reacted fastest to slot in the rebound.
This late twist delivered an important win for Ivan Jurić’s men, who remain bottom but closed the gap to seven points behind Ipswich. The hosts, now suffering four consecutive defeats, missed a golden opportunity to climb out of the relegation zone.
Desperate for a response, Ipswich had targeted this match as a turning point. With upcoming fixtures against Aston Villa, Manchester United, and Tottenham, their survival battle has become even tougher. Southampton, meanwhile, will see this victory as a potential turning point in their season.
The Saints’ resilience was tested after Delap’s equaliser, especially with Harwood-Bellis and substitute Jack Stephens both going off injured. Yet, they maintained their composure, seizing their late chance to claim three vital points.
For Ipswich, Delap remains a bright spark, scoring 41% of their league goals this season. However, his contribution wasn’t enough to prevent another painful defeat. Southampton, on the other hand, will hope this result ignite a much-needed revival.
20th-placed Southampton have garnered only nine points after 24 Premier League outings. Meanwhile, Ipswich Town occupy the 19th spot with 16 points.
