Excelling at one’s field is the joy of every individual. Be it professional or a mere skill that puts food on the table. Meanwhile, success is a quest earnestly desired and it is without sentiments that we must admit that career success was more attainable by men in the 20th century.
However, times are changing fast. Women are now scaling heights without batting an eyelid.
Hitherto, opportunities came in little folds for the average Nigerian woman. That notwithstanding, her eagerness to pursue greatness has never been in doubt. Women do not wait for opportunities to come to them anymore. They go for it. If it is not available, they create one, ride on it, and watch it blossom.
One of Nigeria’s brightest music stars, Omawunmi who has been credited to a statement she made in an interview she granted some years back, where she was reportedly asked what she would do if music does not pay her.
Omawunmi replied that she would go back to her office job. Perhaps, apply for other job opportunities. And what if she doesn’t get a job? The Delta State born entertainer stated that she would “back” her daughter and sell tomatoes.

The songstress is one of the numerous outstanding women out there who are always ready to make a change in their lives, and make a difference in society making them exceptional role models.
Delta State is an oil-rich region in the Southern part of Nigeria. With a population of 4 million people and a good number of ethnic groups in the state, Delta state has produced many great men and women in the country.
Founded 29 years ago, away from Bendel state, Delta state thrives on excellence and propelling talents beyond the state. In addition, the state is known for its excellent performances in Sports Festivals and shooting off a great number of comedians in the country.
In this article, I would be profiling seven women from different professions to have come out from Delta State.

1. Economy & Finance: Ngozi Okonjo Iweala
Okonjo-Iweala was born on June 13, 1954 in Ogwashi-Ukwu, Delta State. The 56 years old economist and international development expert is a Board member at Standard Chartered Bank, Twitter, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), and the African Risk Capacity (ARC).
She served the government of Nigeria as a finance minister from 2003-2006, 2011-2015. This was under the leadership of President Olusegun Obasanjo and President Goodluck Jonathan respectively.
In addition, Okonjo-Iweala had a sterling career at the World Bank for 25 years as a development economist. She rose to the position of Managing Director, Operations from 2007-2011.
Ngozi is married to Dr Ikemba Iweala, a neurosurgeon and their marriage is blessed with four children – Onyinye, Uzodinma, Okechukwu, and Uchechi.
2. Media: Agatha Amata
Amata was born on the 4th of November 1969. The 50 year old media entrepreneur, speaker, talk show host, TV presenter and philanthropist.
She is best known for her talk show called; Inside Out with Agatha. Inside Out with Agatha is the longest running television talk show in Nigeria with over 25 years on air.
Furthermore, Agatha is the Managing Director of Inside-Out Media Ltd, a media consultancy and production firm based in Lagos, Nigeria. Agatha is also the boss at RAVE TV which was established in 2014 and a Radio station Trend FM 100.9 which is situated at Asaba, Delta State.
She was formerly married to Fred Amata, an actor who is also from Delta State.

3. Movie: Omoni Oboli
At 42 years (born: 22 April 1978), Oboli is an actress, scriptwriter, film director, producer and digital filmmaker. The proud mother of three boys studied at the New York Film Academy and has several screenplays to her credit.
Omoni Oboli’s screenplays include The Figurine (2009), Anchor Baby (2010), Fatal Imagination, Being Mrs Elliott, The First Lady and Wives on Strike (2016). She also directed and starred in Moms at War in 2018
4. Music: Omawunmi
Omawunmi Megbele is a 38 years old (born: 13 April 1982), singer-songwriter and actress from the Itsekiri ethnic group. She is a graduate of Law from Ambrose Alli University.
Omawunmi also studied French at Alliance Francaise. In 2005 after her graduation, she moved to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where she worked with her family’s law firm called “O.S Megbele & Associates”.
Omawunmi gained attention when she became a runner-up on West African Idols in 2007. A reality TV show which Timi Dakolo won. The brand ambassador for Globacom and Konga married Toyin Yusuf on 13 January 2018.
5. Comedy: Real Warri Pikin
Anita Alaire Afoke Asuoha, popularly known as Real Warri Pikin is a comedienne born to an Ijaw father and an Urhobo mother. She graduated with a second class upper degree in Political Science/Public Administration from the Benson Idahosa University in 2012.
Anita is famous for her hilarious skits and Instagram videos. She is also an On-Air-Personality with MAX 90.9 FM Abuja. Anita who is also known as the Real Warri Pikin is married with two children.
6. Sports: Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor
Okagbare-Ighoteguonor is a 31 years old (b. October 9, 1988) track and field athlete who specializes in long jump and short sprints. At the Beijing 2008 Olympics, Okagbare won a bronze medal in long jump
At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Okagbare also won the gold medal in the 200m, with a time of 22.25 seconds. This feat made her to become the fourth woman to win the 100m and 200m double at the Commonwealth Games.
7. Writing: Buchi Emecheta
Born on July 21, 1944, Florence Onyebuchi Emecheta was a novelist who wrote plays, an autobiography, and works for children. She was famous for books like Second Class Citizen (1974), The Bride Price (1976), The Slave Girl (1977), and The Joys of Motherhood (1979)
Emecheta’s work focuses more on child slavery, sexual discrimination, motherhood, racial prejudice, female independence and freedom through education. A descendant from Ibusa, Delta state, Buchi Emecheta suffered a stroke in 2010. Emecheta later died in London on 25 January 2017, aged 72.
