Public transport is a reliable means of movement from one location to another. Despite the many complaints about the Nigerian public transport system, it continues to thrive.
Nigeria is an interesting country with amazing people. The late former Director General of the Nigerian Agency for Food, Drug, Administration, and Control (NAFDAC) – Dr. Dora Akunyuli – came up with the slogan ‘Good people, Great nation’ in trying to re-brand the country with her team.
Many Nigerians embraced this slogan and ran with it. Although, there may not be current plans to promote a slogan or re-brand, the people have created brands for themselves.
The behaviour of its citizens are a brand for the country. And there is no better place to look than a typical journey on public transport to understand the Nigerian brand.
Being a frequent user of public buses, Blessing Enenaite has observed many co-passengers, especially in Lagos.
1. The haggler:
This type of commuter makes it a point of duty to pay the lowest possible fare to their destination. ‘’Conductor, you no go collect hundred naira?’’ they would plead as they get on the bus.
An opposing statement from the bus conductor would displease them and the they would rather wait for an alternative bus than pay what they consider to be exorbitant. However, if they choose to stay on the bus, it is after they have bargained to their satisfaction.
2. The car owner:
The people in this group are quick to speak whenever they feel disrespected by the driver or bus conductor. ‘’I get my own car o. Na traffic make me enter this your kpangolo bus’’, they would quip as they let all passengers know that they are the proud owner of a car.
Often, they would complain about the state of the bus and how they can afford to buy the bus and even its driver and conductor.
3. The assistant driver:
There are some persons in public buses who have taken it upon themselves to direct the driver on how to do his job. At intervals, the driver would hear statements like, “Oga why you no overtake that bus na? You are too slow! Abeg where you take learn this your driving from sef? Shey you think say we go sleep for this traffic ni?“

It takes a driver with an equally sharp tongue to put ‘the assistant driver’ in their place. Often, the displeasure of the passengers is accompanied with insults till the bus gets to its destination.
4. The commentator:
Those in this category have a wide knowledge base. Most times, the government is the topic of their discussion. They dish out their opinions to the extent that you will be convinced that they can successfully rule a nation.
Conversations eventually lead to arguments. They feel disrespected when their opinions are challenged or are made to feel that their opinion does not count in the affairs of the country.
5. The preacher:
Preaching the gospel is the aim of anyone in this group. They start with songs of praise and worship to God. Thereafter, they proceed with a message so crafted to make everyone have a rethink about their lives.
Their messages often bring hope to the downtrodden. Regardless of the fact that some passengers may not be comfortable with their preaching, it does not stop them from speaking. The preacher is quite notable among the kinds of people on public transport because of their boldness.

6. The marketer:
The sole aim of the marketer is to sell one product or the other. They have mastered their craft and are eloquent at using enticing words to lure passengers to part with their cash.
They may even give a discount to encourage multiple purchases. The products could be anything but are usually solutions to various health problems.
7. The observer:
The observer is the quietest passenger on public transport. They appear oblivious to all that goes on during their commute. In most cases, they just want to arrive at their destination safely and in one piece.
But do not be deceived. The observer is best placed to document the entire journey.
