Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu has ordered an immediate scale‑up of waste evacuation operations across Lagos State following concerns over the recent accumulation of refuse in parts of the city.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the Governor assured residents that the situation is receiving the highest level of attention from the machinery of government.

“We are not oblivious to the inconveniences and concerns occasioned by the situation. Lagosians deserve a clean, healthy and environmentally sustainable city, and this administration remains fully committed to delivering on that obligation,” Sanwo‑Olu said.

He directed the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and other relevant agencies to intensify efforts. Additional resources have been deployed to support ongoing operations, while strategic interventions are being implemented to strengthen efficiency and improve waste collection across affected areas.

The government noted that Lagos generates about 13,000 tons of waste daily, ranking among the highest in Africa. While acknowledging occasional operational disruptions, it stressed that “the capacity, determination and resolve of the Government to address them remain unquestionable.”

The statement highlighted that progress is already being recorded in several locations, with more improvements expected in the days ahead. The administration pointed to its long‑term investments in environmental sustainability, waste management infrastructure, and urban renewal initiatives, which will continue to be strengthened.

Residents and other stakeholders were urged to remain calm and confident, dispose of waste responsibly, and avoid practices that obstruct drainage channels, roadways, and designated collection points.

The Government is firmly on top of the situation and is pursuing a comprehensive response designed not only to clear the current accumulation but also to reinforce the long‑term resilience of the state’s waste management architecture. “A cleaner Lagos is not merely an aspiration; it is a commitment we will continue to deliver.”
