Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has stepped down from his post with immediate effect.
According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Mr Abubakar conveyed his decision to President Bola Tinubu in a letter dated 1 December, explaining that he was resigning on health grounds.
Onanuga added, “President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Abubakar for his services to the nation.”

He also noted that the President is expected to notify the Senate of a replacement “later this week.”
Abubakar, 63, previously served two terms as governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before being appointed Defence Minister on 21 August 2023.
The resignation comes at a time when President Tinubu has declared a national security emergency. As Onanuga explained, “His resignation comes amid President Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency, with plans to elaborate on its scope in due course.”
