Remo Stars appoint new technical adviser to beat drop

Remo Stars have appointed former Super Eagles assistant coach Usman Abd’Allah as their new Technical Adviser. They are turning to a title-winning tactician to rescue their season. Currently, the defending champions languish at the bottom of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table.

The 51-year-old takes over with the Sky Blue Stars rooted in 19th position. The team has collected just 27 points from 27 matches. Sixteen defeats and three draws have left the champions five points adrift of safety. Moreover, there are only 11 games remaining.

Abd’Allah brings extensive credentials to the rescue mission. He holds a UEFA Pro Licence and advanced coaching degrees from Le CREPS de Montpellier in France. Therefore, he combines international exposure with deep knowledge of Nigerian football.

He previously guided Enyimba to the NPFL title in the 2018/19 season and led the Peoples Elephant to the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals. In addition, he also served as an assistant coach for the Super Eagles under Jose Peseiro.

Ogunmodede’s concern

The appointment follows the prolonged absence of head coach Daniel Ogunmodede, who has been away since before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Assistant Sulaiman Kamil oversaw the team on an interim basis. However, results continued to slide.

Recent efforts to resolve the impasse with Ogunmodede reportedly failed, with club sources indicating his time at Ikenne might be over. The club has not officially confirmed his departure.

Remo Stars announced Abd’Allah’s arrival on their official website with immediate effect on Thursday. The club described the move as a step toward elevating performance and strengthening competitive ambitions.

Their recent form reads D-L-L-L-D-L, extending a winless run to six matches. A 2-1 defeat to Wikki Tourists in Jos over the weekend compounded their misery. Jonathan Mairiga and Hassan Musa scored for the hosts before Samson Olasupo’s late consolation.

Only two points separate Remo Stars from the bottom side Kun Khalifat. The relegation zone currently comprises the bottom four positions, and every point carries enormous weight with 11 rounds remaining.

The club faces a congested run-in with 11 matches remaining. Remo Stars host Katsina United this weekend in Abd’Allah’s first test. Captain Stanley Joseph and striker Victor Mbaoma must rally a dressing room searching for belief.

The former Enyimba title winner brings a “global-meets-local” pedigree to Ikenne. His academic background, matched with proven silverware, now faces its sternest examination.
