A decade of dedication: Troost-Ekong celebrates 10 years with Super Eagles

William Troost-Ekong celebrates 10 years as Super Eagles player.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles skipper, William Troost-Ekong, has marked a personal milestone as he celebrates a decade of donning the green and white with pride.

On Saturday morning, the veteran defender took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express gratitude for his ten-year journey with the national team.

Troost-Ekong, who made his debut under the late Stephen Keshi in Kaduna on June 13, 2015, posted a series of nostalgic photos – two from his early days in the squad and others from the present.

Alongside them, he penned a touching tribute to the late Stephen Keshi. The iconic coach, who led Nigeria to the 2013 AFCON title, handed Ekong his first international cap.

The post came just hours after Ekong led the Super Eagles to a 1-1 draw against Russia in Moscow on Friday. Although an own goal from Semi Ajayi put Nigeria behind in the first half, substitute Tolu Arokodare stepped up in the second half with a composed finish to draw level. Interestingly, the goal marked Arokodare’s maiden strike for the national team.

Ekong’s Super Eagles legacy

As captain, Ekong’s leadership has been tested and proven across major tournaments. From AFCON battles to World Cup campaigns, he has stood tall in defence, amassing 79 caps, featuring in five major tournaments, and earning three medals.

Ekong, who was named Player of the tournament at last year’s AFCON, emphasised that serving as captain remains the greatest honour of his life.

Moreover, he urged fans and aspiring players alike to chase their dreams, declaring, “No dream is ever too big.” He also stated that playing for Nigeria is not just a job but his divine calling.

Through the highs and lows, injuries and victories, Ekong’s loyalty to the Super Eagles has never wavered.

And with eyes set on more caps, more medals, and deeper legacy, the journey is far from over for the man who once debuted under Keshi’s watchful eye in Kaduna.
