Ademola Lookman has officially submitted a transfer request to Atalanta, citing months of frustration, broken promises, and emotional disappointment behind the scenes.
Despite three remarkable years in Bergamo, the Nigerian forward believes the time has come to seek a new chapter in his career.
Lookman expressed deep gratitude for the fans and the club, stating he gave everything – both as a player and as a person. Notably, he highlighted the club’s historic Europa League triumph as one of the proudest moments of his career. He described the celebrations in Dublin as unforgettable.
However, while his passion for the city and its supporters remains intact, the 26-year-old feels Atalanta have failed to honour their verbal commitments. He revealed that both he and the club’s ownership had previously agreed that he would be allowed to leave if a fair offer came in. Now that such an offer has reportedly arrived, Lookman says the club is suddenly refusing to let him go – a development he finds baffling.

“Poor treatment towards me”
Moreover, the Nigerian international pointed to several private challenges and what he described as poor treatment from the club. Despite enduring these difficulties in silence, he insists he continued to put the fans and team first. Yet, after months of hoping for change, he says he was left with no option but to go public.
“Despite now receiving an offer in alignment to what I believe had been discussed, sadly the club are blocking the opportunity for reasons I do not understand,” the reigning CAF Africa Footballer of the Year stated.
“As a result and after many months of broken promises and what I feel has been poor treatment towards me as both a human being and as a professional footballer, sadly I feel I have no choice but to speak out for what I believe is right and feel that enough is enough.”
In an emotional note to supporters, Lookman apologised for the unfortunate situation. He stressed that his decision stems not from disloyalty but a desire for fairness and respect. He emphasised that his bond with the fans will remain unbroken.
