Nigeria opened their AFCON 2025 journey with a narrow 2-1 victory over Tanzania in a lively Group C contest. The result ensured the Super Eagles claimed an early foothold in Morocco and boosted confidence ahead of tougher tests.
From the outset, Nigeria asserted control through patient circulation and measured tempo. However, despite early dominance, clear chances initially went begging as Tanzania remained compact.
Samuel Chukwueze tested the goalkeeper early, while Akor Adams struck the crossbar from close range moments later. Meanwhile, Tanzania offered brief reminders of danger through Ally Samatta’s athletic effort.
As pressure mounted, Victor Osimhen and Adams both threatened but lacked finishing precision. Still, Nigeria’s persistence finally paid dividends. Semi Ajayi rose highest to power home Alex Iwobi’s cross midway through the first half. As a result, the breakthrough settled Nigerian nerves and tilted momentum firmly their way.

Chukwueze and Osimhen continued probing before halftime, forcing smart saves from the Tanzanian goalkeeper. Yet, Tanzania survived the onslaught and regrouped during the interval.

Lookman’s composure seals vital victory for Nigeria
Nigeria thought they doubled the advantage immediately after the restart, only for VAR to rule Osimhen offside. Suddenly, Tanzania struck back, with Charles M’Mombwa finishing calmly after a defensive lapse.
However, Nigeria responded with authority. Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman restored the lead minutes later, guiding a composed left-footed shot beyond the goalkeeper.
Eric Chelle introduced fresh legs as Moses Simon and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru entered the contest. Upon introduction, the former injected pace and creativity down the flank almost instantly. Nigeria pushed for a third goal as Iwobi and Lookman both went close.
Nevertheless, Tanzania stayed alive, nearly snatching an equaliser late on through a swift counterattack.
Paul Onuachu replaced Osimhen late, as Nigeria focused on game management. Eventually, disciplined defending ensured the Super Eagles secured all three points. The victory places Nigeria in a strong position heading into their next clash against Tunisia.
