Afrobeats growing stronger, not declining – Tiwa Savage

Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has dismissed talks that Afrobeats is losing its global impact or performing poorly.

The singer addressed the issue during the Unstoppable Africans event, where she spoke passionately about the steady rise of the genre and its influence around the world.

Music figures like Paul Okoye, also known as Paulo, and DJ Big N had earlier suggested that Afrobeats is declining.

But Tiwa disagreed, saying the genre is still expanding, topping charts, and attracting larger audiences at concerts and festivals across continents.

She said that Afrobeats achieved its global recognition without much support, structure, or industry backing.

According to her, what started with little belief has now become the world’s fastest-growing sound, connecting Africans and earning respect across borders.

Reflecting on her personal journey, Tiwa shared that while growing up in London, she once felt uneasy about her African identity.

However, the success and cultural pride that Afrobeats now represents have made her deeply proud to be African.

She said: “Afrobeats is the fastest growing genre in the world. We kind of created it with nothing; no support, no infrastructure, no real belief even from our own people initially.

“I remember growing up in London and I was not happy being African. But now I’m so proud because of how big Afrobeats is growing.

“There was a conversation at one point that Afrobeats is going to have its 15 minutes of fame and then fades away. But we are still here. We are not slowing down. In fact, we are filling out stadiums, and we are getting the biggest songs on the charts right now.

“I don’t know how true this is, but apparently one in every four black persons is a Nigerian or an African.

“So, we are not going anywhere. As much as they are trying to quiet us down, the music is not going anywhere. We are Africans and we are unstoppable.”
