Amorim grabs first win as Manchester United manager in club’s slim Europa League victory against Bodø/Glimt

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Ruben Amorim recorded his first win as Manchester United manager after Rasmus Højlund’s double secured a 3-2 victory over Bodø/Glimt in a chaotic Europa League clash.

United got off to a dream start as Alejandro Garnacho capitalised on a shocking mistake by goalkeeper Nikita Haikin. However, Bodø/Glimt stunned the home crowd with two quick goals. Hakon Evjen smashed in the equaliser after a slick move, while Philip Zinckernagel powered through United’s fragile defense, beating Tyrell Malacia with a terrific run, to give the visitors a surprise lead.

Despite the setback, United found a way back before the break. Højlund controlled Noussair Mazraoui’s cross with precision and drilled the ball home. The Danish striker struck again early in the second half, tapping in Bruno Fernandes’ cross after clever play from former Chelsea player Mason Mount.

Amorim made tactical adjustments to steady the team, switching formations twice during the match. Diogo Dalot replaced Malacia at halftime, and United briefly moved to a back four. Mount came close to adding a fourth when his effort grazed the crossbar, following brilliant work from Garnacho on the left wing.

Bodø/Glimt, though trailing, remained a constant threat. A heart-stopping moment ensued when Andre Onana sprinted out of his box to deny a dangerous attack. United’s Cameroonian goalkeeper was called into action again during stoppage time, diving to save Patrick Berg’s well-placed free kick.

Amorim’s second match in charge – this time at Old Trafford – showcased flashes of promise but also highlighted areas needing improvement. His six changes from the weekend’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich brought fresh energy, including Malacia’s first start since last season. Meanwhile, Bodø/Glimt rotated their lineup, mindful of their domestic league ambitions.

With two wins and three draws from five games, United sit 12th in the new league phase. The performance will encourage Amorim, but defensive frailties remain a concern.
