Tinubu, EU Foreign Policy Chief Kallas hold talks on trade, security

President Bola Tinubu yesterday received a high-level delegation from the European Union, led by Kaja Kallas, in talks aimed at strengthening cooperation on trade, security and global stability.

The meeting took place at the Presidentโ€™s residence in Lagos and was attended by senior government officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.

Speaking after the meeting, Ms Kallas described Nigeria and the EU as โ€œlike-minded partnersโ€, stressing the need for closer collaboration amid growing global uncertainty.

She said the evolving geopolitical climate made it increasingly important for countries that support a rules-based international order to work more closely together.

The discussions focused on key areas of mutual interest, including expanding trade and investment, improving cooperation on critical raw materials, and strengthening efforts to tackle security and cybersecurity threats.

โ€œWe are looking at deepening cooperation, particularly in security and cybersecurity, where there is clear potential to do more together,โ€ she said.

Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeriaโ€™s commitment to its longstanding relationship with the European Union, while expressing appreciation for the blocโ€™s continued support.

He assured the delegation of Nigeriaโ€™s readiness to remain a reliable partner in promoting regional stability and global cooperation.

Kallasโ€™ visit highlights the EUโ€™s growing strategic interest in Nigeria, seen as a key player in Africaโ€™s diplomacy and economic landscape, especially as both sides navigate shifting global economic realities.
