As Nigeria marks the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, has issued a stirring tribute to the country’s military personnel, hailing them as the “backbone of national unity.”
In a statement on Thursday, Issa-Onilu emphasised that the peace and sovereignty Nigeria enjoys today are the direct results of the unwavering courage and supreme sacrifices of the men and women in uniform.
Joining the nationwide commemoration, he noted that January 15 serves as more than just a date on the calendar; it is a solemn opportunity for reflection.

He urged citizens to remember those who laid down their lives on battlefields, during internal security operations, and on peacekeeping missions across the globe.
“The courage and patriotism of our fallen heroes remain a lasting reminder of the price paid for Nigeria’s freedom and stability,” Issa-Onilu stated.
He extended his deep appreciation to currently serving officers across the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
He remarked that their tireless commitment to duty is what keeps the nation resilient against evolving security challenges, including the fight against insurgency and banditry.
He paid tribute to the fallen heroes recognised for paying the “ultimate price” for national stability, serving personnel commended for their active role in defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and veterans described as “enduring symbols of discipline and honour” who continue to lead in community and advisory roles.
Beyond ceremonial honours, he challenged Nigerians to translate their appreciation into action.

He stressed that national security is a shared burden, calling for improved civil-military cooperation.
He urged the public to actively support security agencies by providing “timely and credible information,” noting that national cohesion and peace can only be sustained through a united effort from every citizen.
