Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi has handed Nottingham Forest a major boost ahead of the new season, as he returned to full training following a lengthy injury layoff.
The 27-year-old had been sidelined since May after suffering a serious abdominal injury during a league match.
Although the extent of the injury raised initial concerns, Awoniyi has undergone a successful two-stage surgical operation to correct the issue. Since then, he has taken steady steps toward recovery, with his return being closely monitored by Forest’s medical team.

Interestingly, the Nigerian international was already showing signs of progress in the closing weeks of last season. Not only did he leave the hospital earlier than expected, but he was also spotted at the City Ground during Forest’s final Premier League match of the season against Chelsea – an appearance that raised optimism among fans and teammates alike.

On Tuesday, that optimism turned into relief and excitement, as Awoniyi rejoined his teammates in full training for the first time since the setback. Even though he’s expected to be eased back into competitive action, the forward’s recovery progress has been hailed as encouraging.
Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest kicked off their pre-season with a goalless draw against Chesterfield last weekend. Although the match lacked goals, the focus for many supporters has now shifted to Awoniyi’s return and what it could mean for Forest’s attacking options.
With the new season fast approaching, Awoniyi’s comeback could not have come at a better time. If he regains match sharpness as projected, his firepower upfront will be vital to Forest’s ambitions.
