Governor Douye Diri on Friday said Bayelsa is ready to host a 10km international road race in Yenagoa.
He explained that the event will reposition the state as a hub for sports and youth development.
The race is underway today with more than 2,000 athletes from across Africa competing under World Athletics supervision.
According to a statement on Bayelsa Government New Media’s Facebook page, the race begins at Opolo Roundabout and ends at Peace Park. A delegation led by Nadeem Khan of World Athletics is in Yenagoa to oversee the competition.
At a press conference, Diri described the race as historic. Represented by Sports Commissioner Daniel Igali, he said it will boost the local economy and prepare Bayelsa for larger competitions, including the 2028 National Sports Festival.

Information Commissioner Ebiuwou Koku added that sports development is a key policy of the Prosperity Government. She said the race will inspire young people and showcase Bayelsa as a safe destination for international events.
World Athletics representative Nadeem Khan confirmed Bayelsa will be added to the global athletics calendar.

He announced prize money of $5,000 for the winner, $3,000 for second place, $2,000 for third, $1,000 for fourth, and $500 for fifth.
Speaking at the event, Nigeria Olympic Committee First Vice President Solomon Ogba praised the government for hosting the race, describing it as historic and urging the public to embrace the Olympic spirit.
With the 10km race now underway, Bayelsa is showing its ambition to use sports for youth empowerment, community building, and global recognition.
