Bluesky introduces official verification system

Bluesky has launched an official verification system, granting blue checkmarks to “authentic and notable” accounts on its platform.

The platform will proactively verify accounts, displaying a blue checkmark next to their names to enhance user trust and authenticity.

In addition to internal verification, Bluesky is introducing “Trusted Verifier” status for select organizations like The New York Times. These organizations can authenticate affiliated users, with their verified accounts displaying a scalloped blue checkmark.

This new system builds upon Bluesky’s existing self-verification method, which allowed users to verify their identity by linking a domain name to their account.

The update aims to simplify the verification process for independent journalists and creators and reduce impersonation issues.

Although users cannot yet apply for verification, Bluesky plans to open requests once the feature has stabilized based on feedback.

Users can view who verified an account by selecting the blue checkmark and have the option to hide verification through the app’s settings.

This move comes amid increasing impersonation concerns, particularly with the platform’s rising user base, including high-profile figures like former President Barack Obama.

Bluesky’s verification system aims to foster a safer and more trustworthy online environment while aligning with its broader decentralization philosophy.
